Volunteer Treasurer for Crowchild Hockey Association
Description of Charity/Foundation:
Crowchild Hockey Association exists to govern the minor hockey program for the residents of the Northwest Calgary communities of Varsity, Silver Springs and Scenic Acres. The hockey program is provided jointly by Crowchild Hockey Association and the Westwood Hockey Association as partners under the banner of Northwest Warriors. Each partner association maintains their own registered society status, bylaws, financial statements, and governance board.
The NWWs mission is to provide a hockey program for the residents of the communities we serve. Our program aims to develop a strong sense of community spirit, commitment, determination and hard work in the pursuit of personal excellence, with a focus on safety and fun for all participants. We strive to develop the values of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and respect while growing socially, physically, ethically, and emotionally.
Description of Role:
The Crowchild Hockey Association is seeking a community minded, accounting professional to join our Board in the role of Treasurer. The Treasurer’s position is up for election in June 2020.
In addition to being a Board member, the Treasurer of Crowchild Hockey is also one of its Officers and primarily responsible for all financial transactions, financial accounts, budgets, and financial audit procedures.
• The Treasurer shall develop and maintain reporting systems in which all revenues and expenditures of the Association are accurately recorded in the financial records of Crowchild Hockey.
• The Treasurer is responsible for the preparation and presentation of financial statements to external auditors and for presentation of the audited statements to the Members of Crowchild Hockey.
• The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring all payments are properly authorized, issued and recorded.
• The Treasurer shall be responsible for all banking transactions, safety deposit boxes, cash assets, bonds and other assets.
• The Treasurer shall be responsible for the preparation of the annual budget. Each operating committee of the Association must submit their respective, projected budget for the coming year to enable the Treasurer to prepare the Crowchild Hockey annual Budget for approval by the Board. The annual budget must be closely adhered to with substantive variances approved by the Board in advance,
• The Treasurer is a signing authority for contracts, leases, financial transactions and financial documents made out in the name of Crowchild Hockey.
Certification or Education Required:
• For the Treasurer position, we prefer a CPA or CPA student.
• Preference will be given to candidates who are residents of our member communities
• Team player with strong communication & relationship-building skills
• Strategic thinking skills, innovative and creative approaches to problem solving
• We are particularly interested in candidates who hold experience in:
o Not-for-profit sport organizations
o Audit and oversight
o Governance (previous corporate or non-profit Board experience)
o Working with and supporting communities

2 Years or More
