CKUA is a donor-supported arts organization that inspires and connects through the power of music, arts, culture and story. With a focus on musical discovery, we showcase the best creative work from Alberta and beyond and deliver it on-air, online and in-person. With eclectic and engaging programming, colourful characters, and incredible music, CKUA has been a vital part of the Alberta community since 1927.
The Board of Directors serves the Foundation and its members with representatives from across Alberta. The Board works with CKUA’s management team to oversee the development of the strategic plan. The board sets the direction and objectives of the organization. The CKUA Management team executes on the strategic plan and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization.


Description of Role:

As stipulated in the CKUA By-Laws, Board Directors are elected for two-year terms, and limited to serve a maximum of six years. Although recruitment for board members is taking place during summer 2020, the term for new board members starts in January 2021.

Skills we are seeking:
● Senior management experience leading people, strategy, and transformative change.
● Finance and accounting experience, along with a CPA designation.
● Human resources or labour relations experience.
● Legal experience, ideally in the areas of media regulation and/or contracts.
● Fund development or donor relations experience.
● Strong governance experience in a corporate or not-for-profit environment
● Board experience as a committee chair and/or board chair.
● Industry experience in broadcasting or digital media.
● An ICD.D designation is considered an asset.

Volunteer Treasurer/Director for Canadian Skin Patient Alliance (CSPA)

Description of Charity/Foundation:
The Canadian Skin Patient Alliance (CSPA) is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting skin health and improving the quality of life of Canadians living with disorders that affect skin, hair and nails.
We educate and raise awareness about the impacts of skin disorders, support patients, and advocate on behalf of our community for improved access to treatment and care across the country. We also serve as an umbrella organization for Canadian patient groups and organizations that deal with specific skin disorders. By working together, we advocate for the needs of skin patients across the country and provide a broad range of education and support.
Description of Role:
The Canadian Skin Patient Alliance is seeking a dedicated volunteer with a background in accounting and/or finance and an interest in skin health to join our national Board of Directors.

Treasurer Duties
CSPA is seeking a volunteer to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer. The successful candidate must prepare for and attend Executive Committee meetings every month and Board meetings every two months (in addition to special meetings that may occur throughout the year) and participate on the Finance Committee of the board. The Treasurer is also welcome to join other committees or working groups of the board.
The successful candidate must also:
• Have strong accounting and finance skills and understand accounting related to not-for-profit organizations
• Assist with preparing the organization’s financial plans and operating budgets
• Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable and the organization’s overall finances
• Keep the books of account and accounting records of the organization as required by law
• Review, prepare, and present proper financial statements to and for the board
• Liaise with the accountant/auditor to ensure the organization’s accounts are reviewed/audited as required by law and presented to the members at the Annual General Meeting
• Be prepared to assist with a transition from a not-for-profit organization to a charity
• Provide advice and assist with financial planning of the organization.

Requirements and Commitments
• Committed to serving the needs of people with skin disorders and their families
• Ability to communicate in English
• Prepare for and attend meetings on average up to 2 hours per month (including Treasurer duties, preparing for and attending regular Executive Committee, Finance Committee and board meetings)
• Present the CSPA’s financial statements to the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Finance Committee
• Be prepared to commit for a two-year term as a director. Directors may be elected to up to three consecutive terms
• Additional assets include:
• Experience in fundraising
• Knowledge of the health care system in Canada and awareness of the health policy environment
• Ability to communicate in French or languages other than English.

Volunteer Bookkeeper/Office Manager with NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank

Description of Charity/Foundation:
NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank (NMMB) is Canada’s only community-based milk bank. We screen and accept excess milk from mothers who are breastfeeding their own babies. The milk is then pasteurized and dispensed to 34 hospitals across Canada. Human milk is just as much a medicine as it is a food to these compromised/premature babies.

Description of Role:
NMMB has a full time Bookkeeper/Office Manager who handles all the day-to-day roles. We are looking for someone who could assist with the following:
• Preparing annual government reporting; T4’s & T4 summary, Charity Return, WCB Return (oversight)
• Quarterly & annual management reports (oversight)
• Working knowledge of Quickbooks
• Oversee and be available for consultation with the office administrator/bookkeeper
• Oversee and approve payroll and CAFT automatic deposit process
• Ensure any financial data representing the organization is accurate

Volunteer Finance Leader with Youths Can Fish

Description of Charity/Foundation:
To provide youth with the opportunity to attend a sponsored summer camp to learn fishing, Conservation, Survival Skills and Canadian Studies. Volunteer based and grassroots.

Description of Role:
1. Data entry, Bank Reconciliation, Cloud file organizer assistance, Bookkeeper duties on all financial transactions, reports, reconciliations;
2. Attend in person quarterly charity meetings (video meetings are used for now);
3. Filing of Provincial government related financial reports;
4. Reports on outstanding/upcoming expense and revenues;

WECAN Food Basket Society of Alberta is a registered charity that provides individuals and families the opportunity to purchase healthy food at an affordable price. WECAN operates as a “warehouse without walls” – we buy all our food in bulk and distribute it to our community-based depots. Description of Role:

The Board of Directors is a legal authority of WECAN Food Basket Society. As a member of the Board, the Board member acts in a position of trust for the community, and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.

A Board Member’s Duties include, but are not limited to:

Volunteer Treasurer for Action Coalition on Human Trafficking

ACT Alberta is a leading provincial organization with offices in Edmonton and Calgary. Founded in 2008, ACT Alberta is an established and vibrant organization with strong stakeholder relationships built to end human trafficking in Alberta and support victims of human trafficking.

Description of Role:
We are recruiting a Board Member from the greater Edmonton area with skill sets in finance, accounting, and governance to fill the Treasurer role on our executive. Previous board experience and awareness of human trafficking, crime prevention, justice or other complex systems are assets but not required.
The Board of Directors meets bi-monthly. These meetings are facilitated in-person at our regional officies. Once or twice a year the Board meets in person. In addition, the Treasurer is expected to take part in finance related committee work including availability to sign cheques, and to complete the fiduciary responsibilities in finance for the Board. This can be a total of 6-15 hours per month, depending upon the finance work.

Certification or Education Required:
Previous board experience and awareness of human trafficking, crime prevention, justice or other complex systems are assets but not required.
Serving on the Board of Directors offers philanthropic community-minded volunteers an opportunity to learn about this critical issue and to support the work of the organization.

Volunteer Director for The Instrumental Society of Calgary

Description of Charity/Foundation:
The Instrumental Society of Calgary has been producing and staging very high quality classical chamber music concerts in Calgary for over 40 years. Each year we stage 8 separate concerts ( October through May) which feature Calgary’s best classical and contemporary musical artists,( many of whom are also performers with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra) , and with a wide variety of musical settings and compositions..

Description of Role:
We are looking for a Communications Director/Coordinator who is a tech savvy person, to assist in program writing and printing for our concerts, and in the creation of artistic season brochures for each concert season. Production of tickets for the concert season is also required. This person would interface closely with our Marketing personnel, our Artistic Director, the Box Office Director, and with the entire Board of Directors.

Certification or Education:
A responsible person who can work within a team, with experience with computer graphics and good visual sensitivity. Marketing background or experience is also an asset.
Applicable Interests:
Having a strong and demonstrated interest in serious music is a big help. We don’t require extensive musical accomplishments, but it helps if you like music a lot! And this role would entitle you to attend all of our concerts as an included perk.

Volunteer Treasurer for Crowchild Hockey Association

Crowchild Hockey Association exists to govern the minor hockey program for the residents of the Northwest Calgary communities of Varsity, Silver Springs and Scenic Acres. The hockey program is provided jointly by Crowchild Hockey Association and the Westwood Hockey Association as partners under the banner of Northwest Warriors. Each partner association maintains their own registered society status, bylaws, financial statements, and governance board.
The NWWs mission is to provide a hockey program for the residents of the communities we serve. Description of Role:
The Crowchild Hockey Association is seeking a community minded, accounting professional to join our Board in the role of Treasurer. The Treasurer’s position is up for election in June 2020.

In addition to being a Board member, the Treasurer of Crowchild Hockey is also one of its Officers and primarily responsible for all financial transactions, financial accounts, budgets, and financial audit procedures.
• The Treasurer shall develop and maintain reporting systems in which all revenues and expenditures of the Association are accurately recorded in the financial records of Crowchild Hockey.
• The Treasurer is responsible for the preparation and presentation of financial statements to external auditors and for presentation of the audited statements to the Members of Crowchild Hockey.
• The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring all payments are properly authorized, issued and recorded.
• The Treasurer shall be responsible for all banking transactions, safety deposit boxes, cash assets, bonds and other assets.
• The Treasurer shall be responsible for the preparation of the annual budget. Each operating committee of the Association must submit their respective, projected budget for the coming year to enable the Treasurer to prepare the Crowchild Hockey annual Budget for approval by the Board. The annual budget must be closely adhered to with substantive variances approved by the Board in advance,
• The Treasurer is a signing authority for contracts, leases, financial transactions and financial documents made out in the name of Crowchild Hockey.

Certification or Education Required:
• For the Treasurer position, we prefer a CPA or CPA student.
• Preference will be given to candidates who are residents of our member communities
• Team player with strong communication & relationship-building skills
• Strategic thinking skills, innovative and creative approaches to problem solving

o Not-for-profit sport organizations

Description of Role:
Treasurer of the Board
Serve as financial officer of Birth Unlimited.
Attend all Board meetings.
Serve on the executive committee and chair the finance committee.
Ensure that Birth Unlimited is following appropriate financial policies and that qualified staff or consultants perform financial functions. Understand regulatory and legal requirements for financial accounting and standards of practice for nonprofit organizations including casino reports.
Ensure that accurate financial records for Birth Unlimited are being kept
Subject to the direction of the Board, endorse for deposit notes, cheques, and drafts received by Birth Unlimited.
As ordered by the Board, disburse organizational funds and issue cheques and drafts in the name of Birth Unlimited.
Manage, with the finance committee, the Board’s review of and action related to the Board’s financial responsibilities.
Assist in preparing the annual budget and presenting the budget to the Board for approval.
At specified reporting periods, and upon request, provide the President and the Board with an account of transactions by the society and of the financial condition of the Birth Unlimited.
Prepare financial statements for the AGM.
With the Executive Director, select an independent auditor, review the annual audit, and answer members’ questions about the audit.
