Volunteer Board Member for WECAN Food Basket Society of Alberta

Description of Charity/Foundation:
WECAN Food Basket Society of Alberta is a registered charity that provides individuals and families the opportunity to purchase healthy food at an affordable price. WECAN operates as a “warehouse without walls” – we buy all our food in bulk and distribute it to our community-based depots. Volunteers working with local churches, community centers, social service agencies and daycares, staff the depots located throughout Edmonton and surrounding area.
Description of Role:

The Board of Directors is a legal authority of WECAN Food Basket Society. As a member of the Board, the Board member acts in a position of trust for the community, and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.

A Board Member’s Duties include, but are not limited to:
Be fully informed on organizational matters, and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, strategic plans, personnel and advocacy.
Sit on at least 1 (one) standing committee of their choosing, for the duration of their term.
Approve the budget.
Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the Board, committees, staff members, and community to enhance the SOCIETY’S mission.
Certification or Education Required:
Any Accounting background at all. WECAN Food Basket Society is seeking board members with strengths and experience in one or more of the following areas:
Fundraising
Finances-Accounting
Human Resources
Logistical Planning
Working in the Poverty or Social Services sector

Duration of Term:
2 Years or More
