Volunteer Treasurer for The Yards Magazine

Description of Charity/Foundation:
The Yards makes sense of downtown Edmonton’s transformation and growth. It shares insightful urban planning, development, lifestyle and cultural stories that will change the way you see and participate in the core. With an all-star roster of writers and thinkers, professional journalists and designers, The Yards (theyardsyeg.ca) introduces more than 30,000 readers to the issues, faces and businesses that matter to them. The magazine is published four times a year by the Oliver and Downtown Edmonton Community Leagues and supported by a non-profit group, the Central Edmonton News Society (CENS).
Description of Role:
Treasurer – Central Edmonton News Society (The Yards) Board
We are seeking a volunteer treasurer to join the magazine’s oversight board for a two-year term, commencing as soon as possible. The treasurer will ensure the Society is prudently managing its financial resources, while also having the opportunity to provide input as a board member on the future direction of the magazine.

Responsibilities of the role:
Attend monthly board meetings and prepare bank reports for the meetings.
Prepare the organization’s financial plans and operating budgets.
Provide light bookkeeping and coordinate cheque runs with CENS Board.
Prepare year-end working papers for year-end, and reporting as needed.
Assist in review of the quarterly/annual budget.
Prepare financial forecasts where necessary.
Send out invoices and follow up to ensure payments are made.
Participate in brainstorming and generating story ideas for the quarterly magazine.

Certification or Education Required:
Strong accounting and financial skills.
Knowledge of Quickbooks.
Effective communicator with a proven ability to translate complex financial concepts to simple and easily-understood plain language.
An interest in The Yards Magazine.
Enthusiastic about giving back to communities.
Able to commit to attending virtual/online (during COVID) monthly board meetings (~2 hours/month), plus ~7 hours a month maintaining books of the organization.
