Volunteer finance board member for Terra Centre for Teen Parents

Description of Charity/Foundation:
Terra – Centre Teen Parent is a not for profit agency that has been providing programs and services to pregnant and parenting teens and their children in the Edmonton area for 49 years. With a staff compliment of 65 full time employees and a diverse range of 10 programs, Over 1,000 teen parents and their children access services annually. Services are provided at no cost to any young person who fits the criteria at time of service commencement (teen moms 19 yrs. of age and under and young dad’s up to 24 yrs. of age). Services include educational support (individual counselling and groups) to those attending Braemar High School dedicated to teen parents, on site childcare at Braemar School, Housing Services, parenting education supporting early child development though home visitation, services for young dads and a wide range of groups ( prenatal, parenting, cultural activities). Programs and services offered through Terra assist young parents to develop competencies in parenting and to also address personal issues that are a barrier for them to manage their lives effectively. Terra provides opportunity for parents to increase their ability to parent more effectively, return to school, secure employment, to have healthier relationships and connect with other community services.

Description of Role:
– Board members make a minimum of a three-year commitment (one term) with the opportunity to renew for a second term; an additional three years
– Ability to attend monthly board meetings; fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM except for December/July/August,
– Participates in an annual planning day
– This board member would be a member of the Legal Audit Finance Committee that meets approximately 4 times a year to
assist the Board of Directors in fulfilling its oversight abilities for the financial reporting process, the system of internal controls over financial reporting, the audit process and general legal matters. Committee Terms of Reference available upon request.

Certification or Education Required:
Designated CPA.
Financial literacy – the ability to read and understand financial statements
Financial expertise – past or current employment in finance /accounting,
experience in NFP accounting or exposure to an asset but not required
Applicable Interests:
The health and well being of at risk youth and the healthy development of children
Being an active and engaged citizen; although the board operates from a strong Governance model that board does support the organization by helping to widen it’s circle of support from various stakeholders
Supporting the growth of a dynamic ever evolving community building organization
